How to Store Mushrooms

Mushrooms have a high moisture content, and because of this they can get slimy fast if not stored properly in the fridge. You either need to make sure you store them properly, or buy them the day you need them for freshness. I like to do one grocery shop a week, so I create a healthy family meal plan for the whole week, and shop once. This not only saves me lots of time, but also money. Each stop at the grocery store, equals extra purchases. And with each extra purchase, comes extra waste. Whether it’s packaging waste or food waste, I don’t like either.

So you want to know our secret for storing mushrooms and reducing food waste? Ambrosia Flax Linen Produce Storage Bags! Ambrosia bags are offered in two weaves. One that is appropriate for produce that needs to remain moist — lettuce, kale, carrots — and one for produce that needs to stay dry — mushrooms, berries. Who wants slimy mushrooms, wilted greens, or moldy strawberries? No us! Hence we love our Ambrosia bags.

Here is a little experiment we did in our kitchen last week. I purchased a couple pounds of bulk cremini mushrooms, placing half of them in an Ambrosia dry produce bag, and left the rest in a brown paper bag. Then I placed them in the produce drawer for ten days! We all know if we left mushrooms for ten days in those Styrofoam and plastic packages, they would be beyond slimy. So we won’t even go there. This is what we found, though, between the brown paper bag and the Ambrosia mushroom bag. The brown paper bag had begun to pull the moisture from the mushrooms at such a rate that they were drying out, while the Ambrosia produce bag had maintained just the right environment and the mushrooms were as fresh as the day I brought them home!

Ambrosia mushroom storage bag is air permeable and thermo-regulating, keeping mushrooms cool and dry 24/7. Keeping your produce fresh to last throughout the week until you get to their intended recipe use, saves busy mamas time and money.
